Apple Mail program forgets user’s password

From today’s mail bag:

I keep getting this window in Apple Mail over and over: Enter Password for Account “smtpauth.earthlink.net:[myemailaccount]”.

Somehow the password that I enter in this window is not sticking. How do I fix this problem and get rid of the annoying screen message?

    1. Place a check mark in the Mail dialog box labeled, “Remember this password in my keychain.”

    2. Close Mail.

    3. Open Keychain Access (Go>Utilities>Keychain Access). After entering the following text in the search window in the upper right corner of the screen, press the Return key:

    4. Double-click the smtpauth.earthlink.net to bring up its keychain settings on screen.

    5. Click the Access Control tab.

    6. Select “Allow all applications to access this item,” then choose, Save Changes.

Now try logging onto your Mail account to see if the password message disappears.
