Use NuFile to create an Office doc from the Desktop

NuFile is a free, donation-ware preference pane that provides a quick way of creating a blank document pre-formatted for a commonly used application that is accessed in a similar manner to how it’s done in Windows. For instance, with NuFile installed, you can Control-click (right-click, if you’re using a two-button mouse) the Desktop to bring up a drop-down menu that instantly creates a blank Excel document and launches Excel.

During installation, NuFile adds a preference pane and contextual menu plugin to the Library folder. Common file types such as text and Word documents are pre-configured by the NuFile plugin. Additional file types can be added to the drop-down menu using the NuFile preference pane.

If you’re running OS X 10.3 or earlier, the developer recommends that you use version 1.8 instead of version 2.0.
