Backing up Windows files to external drives

From today’s mail bag:

I’m running Windows XP on my iMac. How can I back up the contents of My Computer to my Maxtor drive using VMWare Fusion? I have tried to use Time Machine, but it doesn’t recognize the external hard drive. Is there some special software I should get? I am able to back up Quicken for Windows to my E: drive (Maxtor) each time I close that program.

  1. If you can’t see your Maxtor drive as an available option under Time Machine, that’s an indication that the drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS) rather than for Mac OS X.

Here are the steps you need to follow to remedy the situation:

First, you need to back up all the Maxtor data onto a new folder on your Mac, reformat the Maxtor drive as Mac OS X (Extended) using Apple’s Drive Utility, then copy the data back to the Maxtor.

Second, you need to obtain software such as MacDrive for Windows to enable Quicken and other Windows programs to be able to read and write data to the Mac-formatted backup drive. MacDrive 7 retails for $49.95.
