Marantz Professional PMD620 Audio Recorder

Vendor reps demo’d their wares at the Podcast and New Media Expo exhibit hall. One product that caught my eye was the newest and smallest field recorder from D&M Professional, the Marantz PMD620. Small enough to fit inside a shirt pocket, the Marantz PMD620 is capable of recording 16 or 24-bit MP3 or WAV audio on SD or SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory cards. According to Marantz’s product brochure, the PMD620 is the only pro handheld recorder that includes a built-in speaker and is equipped with two omnidirectional mics located on the top of the device. External mics can be connected via the built-in 1/8″port (sorry, no XLR ports). The PD620 uses 2-AA batteries (Alkaline or NiMH) that can operate the recorder for up to 5 hours. Scheduled for a November release, the Marantz PMD620 is expected to retail for around $400.
